Sustainability in our community

Individuals taking small steps towards sustainability can equal giant steps when taken by communities. Get together with your neighbours and clean up the stream at the end of your street.

Turn local 'trash' into treasure, set up a walking school bus in your area or get involved in a community tree-planting project.

Green communities The time has come to create more sustainable communities, ones that can cope with the issues raised by climate change and increased competition for resources. Several forward-thinking communities are investigating the idea of transition towns. Based on permaculture principles, these involve upskilling the community to become more self-reliant and ensuring the infrastructure they need is produced locally. There is much to be learnt from these early adopters. Start by organising a screening of The Greening of Cuba and The Power of Community, available from the Sustainable Living Centre eco library.

Time to get creative with Waste. Ever wondered what happens to all that stuff collected on inorganic days, or the fabric off cuts from the curtain factory up the road? Is doesn't all need to end up in landfill. Remember that old adage: one girl's trash is another guy's treasure? Check out the waste exchange websites - they're a treasure trove. Here at the Centre we've made rain barrels for the garden out of food grade barrels - until we came along they were destined for the tip.

Transport Private vehicle carbon emissions are a major contributing factor to climate change. We all know about it but the problem seems beyond our control. However, we can vote with our feet or our bus ticket. As communities it's vital to support public transport initiatives by actually taking the train or bus to work, and walking or using the bike for small shopping trips. The more we do this, the more taking public transport will become the norm, and needless driving will be frowned upon.

Green trustees Waitakere City has three trusts that are actively involved in keeping the city clean and green. Projects run throughout the year and include street planting, stream restoration, weed and rubbish removal and tagging clean up, to name but a few… Check the event calendar to discover what's happening in your community.
  • Keep Waitakere Beautiful Trust promotes litter and waste reduction, tree planting and community pride activities. Keep your community looking great; get involved with events like Operation Spring Clean, Trees for Babies and War on Weeds.
  • Tag Out Trust promotes the reduction of graffiti through removal, community service initiatives and education. They support individual volunteers and groups wanting to take action in the community. Learn how to become a graffiti ranger today!
  • WeedFree Trust encourages the protection, restoration and maintenance of native bush in public and private areas. WeedFree comes up with fun, innovative ways of dealing with problem weeds, like making liquid fertiliser from ginger and feeding the Auckland Zoo elephants giant reeds. Find out how to become a WeedFree volunteer.
